Laptop Minimum & Recommended Specifications
Laptop Minimum & Recommended Specifications for Students
These specifications should be used as guidance when making decisions on purchasing a laptop for use at WIS.
MINIMUM specifications are for those who are choosing not to buy a new laptop and want to bring an existing one to WIS.
RECOMMENDED specifications are for those who are choosing to purchase a new laptop and need guidance on which specifications to go with.
We strongly encourage parents to purchase laptops for their children instead of iPads, as using an iPad may hinder teaching, learning, and access to the curriculum in many subject areas. An iPad is better used as an accessory to learning in some subjects where it can be used as a drawing tablet or to complete basic tasks completed in Google applications.
Note on Netbooks, Chromebooks and iPads: While netbooks and Chromebooks are appealing due to their low cost, they have limitations. If considering a netbook, choose one with Intel Atom processors and Windows 10, and maximise RAM and storage. Netbooks are suitable only for basic tasks like internet browsing and word processing, and are not recommended for audio/video production, database work, or math/engineering applications. Chromebooks are best for online applications such as Google Docs and Sheets. iPads will not support essential applications required for software-heavy lessons, such as Adobe XD, Photoshop (full version), Fusion 360 and Adobe Dimension.
Typing Skills: Typing on a keyboard is an essential skill that not only enhances productivity—allowing for faster input compared to touch screens—but also promotes healthier hand positioning and reduces strain on fingers. Developing this skill is crucial for academic success and future career readiness.
Note: If deciding on purchasing a Macbook after Year 9, please contact your course advisor first. Digital Design, Film & Multimedia, Visual Art, Business, Engineering, Mathematics & Science classes may require the use of Windows-only software. If you need Windows-only software it is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED to purchase a Windows laptop. Please contact the IT Service Desk at helpdesk@wis.edu.hk before purchasing a Macbook if Windows is a requirement.
